CDC's Emergency Operations Center for Zika Virus in Texas

As of February the 8th, 2016 the CDC's Emergency Operations Center was activated for the Zika virus.

The virus is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes Species mosquito.

Common symptoms of Zika are, joint pain, fever, rash and conjunctivitis (red eyes) After being bitten my an infected mosquito, the usually mild symptoms will last from several days to a week.

Because the symptoms are mild, its often hard for people to realize if they have been infected. They usually do not get sick enough to go to hospital, and they very rarely die from Zika.

If a woman is infected with the virus while she is pregnant this can cause serious birth defects called Microcephaly, as well as other fetal brain defects.

So far, Texas has had 31 confirmed cases of Zika virus disease. Of those, 30 were in travelers who were infected abroad and diagnosed after they returned home; one of those travelers was a pregnant woman. One case involved a Dallas County resident who had sexual contact with someone who acquired the Zika infection while traveling abroad.

If you have to travel to the american tropics, Know that: Mosquitoes bite day and night. Prevent mosquito bites: • Use insect repellent • Use air conditioning or window/door screens • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
